The Black Pharaohs

About two and a half thousand years ago the land of Egypt was ruled by black pharaohs. They came from the kingdom of Kush, the northern part of today's Sudan. Kush was the ancient Egyptian name of Nubia. For several decades these black kings ruled over vast territories, stretching from the upper reaches of the river Nile northwards to the Mediterranean. History has recorded them as the 25th (Kushite) dynasty of pharaohs.

These Kushite pharaohs were deeply religious and had a great regard for tradition. The cultural and religious life of Egypt, formerly so flourishing, was in decline when they took over. But under them, there was a renaissance. They restored ancient temples and built many new ones. They revived religious ceremonies that had fallen into disuse.

When in the 7th century BC the black pharaohs were driven out of Egypt they returned to their lands where they ruled for more than a thousand years. As royal tombs for their rulers they built pyramids which numbered more than all those of Egypt.
